Are you feeling the heat?

Global warming and sustainability are on everyone’s agenda.

These key issues are influencing the way organisations think and act.

Organisations are facing increasing pressure to be responsible, transparent and accountable for how they perform in regard to sustainable development. The Government and Stakeholders demand to know what organisations have done and what they plan to do.

Government demands

Government sustainability demands come in the form of new statutory requirements like the National Greenhouse Energy Reporting (NGER) Act and emerging requirements like the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

Stakeholder demands

Organisations are also feeling the heat from shareholder and stakeholder groups. They expect organisations to exercise Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and strive for a balance between environmental, social, and economic performance.

The 'triple bottom line' (also known as “TBL”, “3BL” or “People Plant & Profit”) is rapidly gaining recognition as a framework for measuring an organisation’s performance. This means an organisation must not only consider its economic bottom line, but also the social and environmental successes and consequences of its actions.

• The financial bottom line is the traditional conclusion of annual reports. It shows how the organisation has benefited its investors.
• A social bottom line shows how the organisation has benefited society.
• An environmental bottom line would show how the organisation has contributed to the sustainability of its environment.
